A landmark release: Transparency (opacity masks, blending modes like Multiply/Screen) and PDF 1.4 as native file format (making .ai files true PDFs). Under new engineering leadership, 7.0 replaced the entire codebase with a cross-platform framework (shared with Photoshop 4.0).
