Elena’s hand shot to the power button. She held it down. Nothing happened. The screen flickered, but the swarm only grew. Vex was fighting them, leaping and tearing at the clones with digital claws, but for every one he destroyed, two more split from the original purple core.

She was editing her resume when Vex’s ears flattened. The galaxy of nodes turned a sickly amber. A low, guttural hum emanated from her speakers.

On day six, things changed.

For five days, the trial was perfect. Her laptop booted in seconds. Websites loaded like lightning. Vex would occasionally appear, cracking a dry joke about a phishing attempt or a suspicious PDF. Elena started to enjoy his company. She’d leave the laptop open just to watch him pace the perimeter of her desktop, sniffing at files.
