He pulled up a vocal track—a breathy demo his ex-girlfriend had recorded before she left town. He set the key to C minor, retune speed to zero, humanize off. He pressed play.
But something was off.
The studio lights buzzed. The room temperature dropped. From his monitors came a sound—not a voice, not a synth, but the memory of a voice. A thousand auto-tuned breaths stacked into a choir of missing persons. The lyrics of every unfinished song he’d ever abandoned sang back at him in reverse.

He clicked it by accident.
“That’s not Sarah.” Maya pointed at the waveform. It was moving without playback. The little blue line was wiggling, scribbling words in real time. Leo leaned in.
He tried to delete the plugin. Permission denied. He tried to trash the folder. It reappeared. He restarted his Mac. The login chime was in perfect C minor, retuned to -47 cents.
