When Messala returns from Rome after five years of military training, he has changed. He believes in Roman supremacy and mocks Judah’s hope for a Jewish Messiah who will free Israel. Their argument ends the friendship. During a Roman parade, a loose roof tile falls from Judah’s house — accidentally dislodged by Tirzah — and hits the Roman governor, Gratus. Though Judah had nothing to do with it, Messala seizes the opportunity to destroy the wealthy Jewish family. He sentences Judah to slavery in the Roman galleys , and imprisons Miriam and Tirzah without trial. Their property is seized.
As Judah is marched away, he collapses from thirst — but a young carpenter’s son from Nazareth gives him water. Judah never forgets that act of mercy. Judah is chained to an oar on a Roman warship. For three years, he endures brutal conditions. During a battle with pirates, the Roman commander Quintus Arrius is impressed by Judah’s strength and leadership. When the ship sinks, Judah saves Arrius’s life. Arrius adopts him as a son, granting him Roman citizenship and freedom. Part 4: The Chariot Race Now a successful Roman citizen, Judah returns to Judea seeking revenge against Messala and searching for his mother and sister, who have vanished. He learns they were sent to a leper colony — but he doesn’t know if they’re alive.
He visits the dying Messala, who — with bitter respect — reveals that Miriam and Tirzah are alive but lepers in the Valley of the Lepers. Judah finds his mother and sister, their faces ravaged by leprosy. They hide from him, ashamed. Devastated, he seeks out the carpenter’s son — now known as Jesus, about to be crucified.
On Golgotha, as Jesus dies, a violent storm erupts. Rain washes over Miriam and Tirzah — and miraculously, their leprosy is healed. They reunite with Judah.

The race is the novel’s centerpiece: Nine laps, four chariots per team. Messala tries to kill Judah, but Judah’s superior skill and four white horses outmaneuver him. In the final lap, Messala’s chariot crashes horribly. Judah wins but doesn’t feel joy — only emptiness.
To humiliate Messala, Judah enters the in Antioch. Messala is the undefeated champion, famous for his razor-spoked chariot wheels that maim opponents.
