Mabel’s fingers—translucent, trembling—hovered over the screen. She’d been a schoolteacher in 1922. Lost her larynx to illness before she died. In life, she’d carried a slate and chalk. In death, she’d managed with nods and gestures and the kindness of other ghosts who learned her shorthand.

“Yes, Thor, thank you,” Sam said.

“Mabel,” Sam said gently, “do you want to try?”

“I am sad.”

Silence. Even the boiler stopped clanking.
