In the world of industrial power transmission and heavy machinery, the ability to control torque, speed, and mechanical stress is paramount. While common devices like gearboxes and clutches are widely understood, niche components such as the Jedok Converter play an equally vital role in specialized applications. The Jedok Converter is a hydrodynamic coupling device, primarily used in heavy industrial contexts to provide controlled, shock-free power transmission from a prime mover (such as an electric motor or diesel engine) to a driven load. Its primary function is to act as a torque converter and a starting clutch, offering distinct advantages in protecting machinery and ensuring smooth operation under extreme load conditions. Design and Basic Principle At its core, the Jedok Converter operates on hydrodynamic principles, similar to a fluid coupling but with an additional reactor element that allows torque multiplication. The device consists of three main components: a pump impeller (connected to the input shaft), a turbine runner (connected to the output shaft), and a stationary or freewheeling reactor (stator) positioned between them. The entire assembly is enclosed in a housing filled with a specified volume of hydraulic oil.
