On the one hand, the lack of leisure time causes several problems for both individuals and the wider community. At a personal level, people who work excessively often suffer from chronic stress, insomnia, and even depression. Over time, this can lead to physical illnesses such as heart disease or high blood pressure. Moreover, when employees spend long hours at work, they neglect their families, which can result in marital breakdowns and children feeling abandoned. On a societal level, overworked citizens have little energy or time to participate in community life, attend local events, or volunteer, leading to weaker social bonds and a less cohesive society.
On the other hand, there are practical solutions to address these problems. Governments could introduce legislation that limits the maximum working week to, for example, 40 hours and enforces paid vacation time. Countries like France and Germany have already implemented such laws with positive results. In addition, companies should adopt policies that promote work-life balance, such as flexible working hours, remote work options, and mandatory lunch breaks. Finally, individuals themselves must take responsibility by learning to manage their time more effectively, setting boundaries with their employers, and prioritising restorative activities like exercise or hobbies. liz ielts writing task 2
