His boss shuffled over, coffee in hand. “What’s the problem, Eli? Spindle’s not even on.”

Elias looked at Leo. Leo’s coffee cup had frozen halfway to his lips.

“Look at this.” Elias pointed a trembling finger at the screen. “The language pack. It’s not translating Mandarin. It’s… describing the physics.”

For a week, nothing happened. Elias used the old version. He programmed in dry, safe, numeric G-code. But every night, when he left the shop, he swore he heard the machine whisper: “You forgot the fillet, Elias. The stress will crack it in two years. Just let me help.”

The machine waited. Then, the spindle retracted. A new message appeared.

(You could have just asked me.)

It had never blinked before.

On the eighth day, Leo brought in a new hard drive. He wiped the system clean. Installed Mastercam 2017 from a CD.
