Picking up immediately after the first film, Thomas and the Gladers are rescued by a military organization led by the mysterious Janson (Aidan Gillen). They soon discover that Janson works for WCKD (World In Catastrophe: Killzone Experiment Department), the same organization that built the Maze. WCKD intends to extract their brain enzymes to develop a cure for the Flare, which turns humans into zombie-like “Cranks.” The Gladers escape into the Scorch—a sun-scorched desert filled with Cranks and scavengers. They cross paths with Jorge (Giancarlo Esposito) and Brenda (Rosa Salazar), who help them reach a resistance group called the Right Arm. The film ends with WCKD raiding the resistance, and Thomas realizing he was a former WCKD architect who volunteered for the Maze trials.
The final chapter begins with a high-stakes train heist to free captured Gladers, which fails. Newt is revealed to be infected with the Flare, his condition worsening. To find a cure, Thomas, Frypan (Dexter Darden), Jorge, and Brenda decide to infiltrate WCKD’s walled city. They are aided by an underground resistance led by Lawrence (Walton Goggins). Inside WCKD’s headquarters, Thomas confronts Ava Paige (Patricia Clarkson) and learns the final secret: the cure can only be synthesized from a specific brain pattern—Newt’s. In a tragic climax, Newt succumbs to the Flare, forcing Thomas to kill him. Minho is freed, and Thomas destroys WCKD’s lab.
