Pandora is a paradise of bioluminescent jungles, floating mountains, and deadly creatures. The air is toxic to humans. But its value lies in —a room-temperature superconductor worth $20 million per kilogram. The Resources Development Administration (RDA) has built a heavily fortified base called Hell's Gate, led by the ruthless Colonel Miles Quaritch.

Jake arrives weak, cynical, and alone. He meets Dr. Grace Augustine, the head of the Avatar Program, who despises him. "Your brother was a scientist," she scoffs. "You're just a Marine with a bad back." Her avatars—hybrid Na'vi/human bodies grown from DNA—are for research, not combat. But Quaritch sees Jake differently: "I need a man on the inside."

He gives Jake an ultimatum: deliver the Na'vi's surrender by sunrise, or the RDA will destroy Hometree. Jake reveals the truth to the clan. Eytukan and the Tsahik (spiritual leader) Mo'at feel betrayed. They bind Jake and Grace. But before the RDA attack, Jake breaks free.
