Few things are as frustrating online as a sudden barrage of alarming pop-up windows. You might hear someone say, “My computer has a pop-up virus!” However, this phrase is technically a misnomer. Strictly speaking, a virus is a type of malicious code that replicates itself by attaching to other programs or files. The endless, alarming pop-ups you see are rarely caused by a traditional virus.
