In the end, the most frightening thing about Dren is not her stinger or her speed. Unlike the extraterrestrial predators or supernatural demons of classic horror, Dren is not a force of nature or ancient evil. Genetic engineers Clive Nicoli (Adrien Brody) and Elsa Kast (Sarah Polley) are employed at a pharmaceutical company called N.E.R.D. (Nucleic Exchange Research and Development). After successfully splicing together the DNA of various animals to create two slug-like, hermaphroditic creatures (Ginger and Fred), they want to push further.
