Bing (Daniel Kaluuya in his breakout role) is a quiet, resentful cyclist. He meets Abi (Jessica Brown Findlay), who sings beautifully. Bing falls for her and spends 15 million Merits (years of savings) to buy her a ticket to Hot Shot.

He does it. Live. The nation watches.

People live in gray walled cells, wearing identical grey jumpsuits. They cycle on stationary bikes to earn Merits, which buy food (synthetic apples), digital wallpaper, and ad-skipping. The only escape from the dreary cycling life is Hot Shot — a X Factor -style show where contestants perform for judges. Winners get a better life; losers go back to the bikes.

He tries everything: finding the princess (she’s in a fake room built inside an art installation, hidden in plain sight), using a body double (the kidnapper has live video inside 10 Downing Street). Ultimately, he has no choice. At first, everyone assumes it’s a sick joke

The princess was released 30 minutes before the act. The kidnapper, an artist named Carlton Bloom, then kills himself. The public quickly pretends the whole thing never happened. Callow’s marriage survives but is hollow. Years later, at a dinner party, someone mentions the princess’s wedding — she’s fine. Callow is still haunted. No one talks about the pig.
